What do volunteers do?

From the beginning, Faith in Action has been, and to this day remains, primarily staffed by volunteers, whose efforts and energy are essential for the work we do. FIA currently has over 70 volunteers working in various capacities. As a FIA volunteer you may:

As a FIA volunteer you may:

  • Typically work a set weekly 3.5-hour shift
  • Greet visitors who have arrived to shop
  • Register the visitor's shopping visit into our computer system
  • Answer phones, answer inquiries, schedule food pantry appointments
  • Receive and organize donated food
  • Assist clients shopping in the food pantry
  • Take food orders over the phone for curbside pick-up

In Chelsea only, a volunteer might also:

  • Help people looking for durable medical equipment from our medical supply closet
  • Receive donated clothing, medical equipment and small household items
  • Sort donations and organize the clothing room
  • Remove unsuitable donations, and put them in a separate area

Off-site Volunteer Roles include:

  • Serve as food drive coordinator for your congregation or group
  • Sponsor a single person or family with gifts for the holidays
  • Sponsor a child to receive a new backpack and school supplies
  • Serve as CROP Walk promoter in your congregation or group (CROP designates 25% of pledges for FIA)
  • Make a financial donation or pledge in your estate planning
  • Help with fundraising or mailings
  • Other special projects as occasionally needed
